Our History
The Good Maharaja: Our Inspiration
The Maharaja Schools of Warsaw bear a name that honors one of the most remarkable humanitarian stories of World War II. In 1942, when hundreds of Polish children orphaned by war had nowhere to turn, His Highness Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji of Nawanagar, India, opened his home and his heart.
Against considerable opposition and at his own expense, he established a settlement in Balachadi (near his summer palace in Jamnagar) that would become home, school, and sanctuary for over a thousand Polish children. For these young survivors, he became "Bapu" (father), creating a loving environment where they could heal, learn, and preserve their Polish culture.
1942
Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji welcomes over 1,000 Polish orphaned children to his summer palace in Balachadi, India, saving them from wartime displacement.
1942-1946
The Balachadi settlement becomes a home where children maintain Polish language, Catholic faith, and cultural traditions while experiencing Indian hospitality and education.
Post-War Era
Many "Maharaja's children" return to Poland, carrying with them the story of the Good Maharaja's compassion and establishing lifelong bonds between Poland and India.
1990s - Present
Schools across Warsaw are named in honor of Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji, ensuring his legacy of compassion continues to inspire new generations.
